Reflection:

This was the last meeting for this issue of IndyKids. During this meeting we copy-edited the pages of the issue that is coming up. It was interesting to see the mock up of this issue as opposed to just seeing it on regular computer paper because it gave more meaning to the articles that were in the paper. I learned that there is a lot of effort that goes into editing and creating an issue of a newspaper.
Most of the articles focus on multicultural issues that are going on in the world currently. One of the articles that touched me the most was a woman who had just lost her son in Iraq and was now at risk for losing her house. Luckily people were able to raise about 30,000 dollars to save her house from foreclosure. I think that it is important that students are exposed to this because it is important that they know what is going on in the world around them. If children do not learn or hear about events like this, I think that it will be difficult for them to understand or deal with their own life's experiences when it comes time for them to experience something that may not be so pleasant.
As a future teacher I would want my students to understand life and everything that comes with it. Some teachers want to shelter their students from things like this, and I think that it is unfortunate because they are depriving them of learning to cope and deal with certain things. As a result they might not be prepared.
