call and response

Call and Response
Tribeca Cinema

Held by Stop Child Trafficking Now

This was an extremely powerful and moving documentary about the child slavery and trafficking that is going in the world right now. Child slavery and trafficking is a problem all over the world; from Eastern Europe to Asia to India. One of the most haunting stories to me was the story of young women in Cambodia who are repeatedly 'sewn up' in Cambodia to replicate an intact hymen; because young virgins are sought after there. These girls are sold to men to be raped repeatedly. Call and response is a documentary meant as a call to people all over the world by musicians all over the world to stand up against this inhumane treatment of people everywhere.
As a woman and a human being, I am completely appalled by these human rights violations. As a teacher, I would definitely encourage all my peers to check out www.SCTNow.org (hint, hint) and join me on September 27, 2009 in the Inaugural Walk to STOP Child Trafficking Now. I may even encourage my class to do this if I am lucky enough to be teaching at this time next school year. I think this is a cause that students can get passionate about; even if we as educators can not necessarily get into the gruesome details of the horrific nature of this crime. Child trafficking does need to be stopped; there are no benefits to this kind of slavery.
