I attended a session of Conversations of Color that focused on social action. People discussed different organizations they were involved in. One girl brought information about the crisis in Darfur. Another person shared information about an organization that helps abused women and disabled persons. Other groups dedicated to fighting Breast Cancer were discussed.
We also discussed what the meaning of activism really is. Is wearing a ribbon or bracelet considered activism? Or is it more than that? I feel that ribbons and bracelets are a form of activism in that they promote awareness, but true activism requires more involvement. However every little bit counts.

Hey Meghan! Oh it would have been interesting to be part of this discussion! I agree with you when you "say every little bit counts" in regards to activism however I agree with you more when you speak of "true activism". True activism embodies actual action towards making change. I believe it goes much further than simply wearing a pin, bracelet, having a bumper sticker on your car, etc. These, although they signify support, aren't enough to create the systematic and societal change that we need. Only through getting our hands dirty from the muck of injustice will we be able to see change occur. I wish I would have attended this event. I always get emails about "conversations of color" but have never had the time to go. Lame. ;)
